Outstanding Farm Family 2006
The Rakers - Staying True To Their Roots
We salute The Rakers who were voted 2006 Outstanding Farm Family for Wakulla County. The Rakers have a link to the county's past by farming 25 acres of land off Lonnie Raker Road, harvesting vegetables, raising a dozen hogs and four cows, and selling a wide variety of game birds. Despite the county's move away from agriculture, the Rakers are a refreshing trip back into history.

Doug and Starla Raker are the third generation of the family to be honored as Wakulla County's Outstanding Farm Family of the year. Doug's father and mother, Lowell and Jane Raker, were named winners of the award in 1980. And Jane's father and mother, Son and Jane Glover, won the 1955 award, the first year it was given.

Dale Bennett, County Extension Director, said the Rakers were selected due to their interest in keeping agriculture alive in Wakulla County as well as their endeavors. "They're good people," said Mr. Bennett.
